5pm - The Basques and their Rank in World Cultures -

Thu October 11, 2012

Event Description:
Presentation by BILL SMALLWOOD about the history and values of the Basque culture.

More Info:

Did you know that documents and archaeological excavations show that the Basques were navigating precisely to Red Bay, Labrador in the early 1500s and quite possibly well before that? And, when John Adams was blown off course on one of his trips to France, he had to take a road trip through Spain? This is where he discovered a centuries-old parliament house in Gernika, an observation he used in a later essay, "In Defense of the Constitution," to show that the Basques had proven that democracy works long before the concept was dreamed up in his own country. Bill Smallwood's presentation will talk about how the Basque culture has contributed to the world.
